Re: 2003 Season
In Roeder's defence - and of course he should never have got the job - Di Canio was the source of a lot of difficulties. Picking up mysterious injuries, not pulling his weight in away games, having a troubled relationship with Kanoute. I was told about this personally before the season started, when we were all really happy having just finished 7th. The source was a West Ham legend who was closely involved with the club at that point.

I think David James in his autobiography also referred to a senior player causing massive problems. He didn't name him but described him in a way that could only have meant one person.

Ultimately though it comes down to the board not spending enough money to reinforce the squad at the start of the season, for which Brown had the sense to apologise in the programme notes for the last game. That, and the fact that Roeder made some stupid choices - recalling an unfit Kanoute to the team for the crucial match at Bolton being one glaring example.

Re: 2003 Season
All excuses aside, how a team can get relegated with players like Glen Johnson, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Jermaine Defoe, Di Canio, Kanoute, Trevor Sinclair and Les Ferdinand is a fookin travesty!

Re: 2003 Season
yeah PDC played very few away games at all....if I remember rightly?

Re: 2003 Season
The problem was our full backs.

No-one predicted Schemmel's form would drop off a cliff like it did. For Winterburn it was one season too far, whilst the likes of Minto and Repka weren't upto the job.

As soon as Johnson got given a chance and Brevett came in our defence improved significantly allowing us to start picking up points and going on a run at he end of the season.

In defence of Roeder though, he was messed about significantly by the left back he thought he'd signed on a Bosman from Newcastle (name I can't remember) who dicked us about for months until it was revealed his contract hadn't actually expired so he wasn't available.

Re: 2003 Season
I remember

Roeder was draining should of been sacked that was the main cause as Brooking coming in showed this

David James had bad form and should of been replaced by Van Der Gouw for a few games at least

Defence was shit, Rufus Brevett improved it half way thru

Players agents started talking in their ears for moves

Should of signed some players at the start.
Missed out on Robbie Savage

Re: 2003 Season
Relegated with 42 points the highest ever. Mainly down to Roeder, so nearly pulled off a miracle when Sir Trev took over. Done double over Chelsea also that season. Vividly remember Di Canio scoring the winner against them in the last home game was in the BMU I am sure the foundations shook that day.

Everyone forgets how PDC often couldn't be arsed in some away matches.

Rose tinted glasses etc.

Was that the Gary Breen season, when we pipped Barcelona for his signature....oh those were the days haha

Re: 2003 Season
First thing Brooking did when he took over was bring PDC back and with the improved results we nearly escaped.

David James was in full calamity mode for several games too.

Re: 2003 Season
Roeder exiled Paolo from the team which was a huge reason why we dropped... Roeder was an idiot... Fucking weak, pencil-necked, rat-faced cunt...

Dailly and Repka were comical at the back... Like fucking Dumb and Dumber...

Re: 2003 Season
I was at the first game of the season vs Arsenal. We were briiliant for 70mins, played them off the park and that was one of the best arsenal sides.

I reckon if the penalty goes in and we win the game, we would have had a completely different season, I've always felt that.

Although, we were shocking at the back and had nothing up top for most of the season, due to Kanoute and Dicanio not being interested, IMO.

He was more up for it under Harry redknapp than glenn Roeder

If he was up for it, is a big if.

Re: 2003 Season
However it wasn't glenn roeders fault...he was offered the job and took it.

The fault lies with terry brown who offered him the job

Di canio, was west ham at the time in my opinion...if he was up for so was west ham.

Re: 2003 Season
Not saying Di Canio is/was a one man team but by Roeder dropping him did that have an impact on us getting relegated?
Or were we simply better without Di Canio in the team?

Son of Anarchy 3:28 Mon Aug 25
Re: 2003 Season
To use a latter day scenario...Roeder did to di canio what Andre villas boas tried to do to the Chelsea stars.

Just an inexperienced manager trying to stamp his authority but failed

Re: 2003 Season
Such a shame, some good performances too. Arsenal at home stands out, Kanoute missing a penalty to make it 3-1.

It would have to be that fat pricks Bolton side who relegated us too!

Anyone know what really happened between Roeder & Di Canio?

Organi5ed Chao5 2:22 Mon Aug 25
Re: 2003 Season
Not signing a striker at the beginning of the season was a major factor.

We had a very young Defoe, good player, but he was still developing and not a stage where you could rely on him as your main attack.

We had Di Canio and Kanoute, but with injury issues. So not getting someone else in was a bad move.

We had to play a central defender, Ian Pearce as a striker for a lot of these games.

We improved when we bought Les Ferdinand in January, but I think we were quite far behind at that stage, so it was too little too late.
